This week’s blog topic is about, “Memorable Clubs Of The Past 50 Years.” As we head into the final major of the year, the major club companies always have a trick up their sleeves to give their players the best chance at winning The Open. Which inevitably sends us into a nostalgic tailspin as we drool over the new gear and reminisce on years past. We always look back with misty eyes, when every Summer was baking hot and every shot was hit out of the middle of the club. So, let us take a little walk down memory lane and remember some of the favorites…but not too far.

The Ping Eye2 Irons

Launched in 1982, Ping Eye2 irons became one of the most popular and influential iron sets in golf history. Known for their perimeter weighting and unique design, these irons offered unmatched forgiveness and consistency. Their popularity was so enduring that they remain sought after by golfers even decades later.

You cannot however talk about PING and not mention the Anser putter, the shape, the sound and probably the most iconic putter of the past 50 years. Used by many greats from Ballesteros to Norman to Couples. Did you know that Seve has 47 wins all with the Anser putter and that means 47 Golden replicas in the famous PING safe!

During the late 80’s the golfing World from the teebox transitioned from the beauty of wood to the brute of metal, and shafts followed closely from steel to graphite. John Daly famously promoted the Wilson Whale along with Payne Stewart! Remember that one?

The Big Bertha Driver (1991)

Callaway’s Big Bertha driver revolutionized the driver market when it was introduced in 1991. Its oversized head and innovative design provided a larger sweet spot, making it easier for players to achieve longer, straighter drives. The Big Bertha set the standard for modern drivers and sparked a trend towards larger, more forgiving clubs..

The Scotty Cameron Putter (1990s-Present)

Scotty Cameron putters, introduced in the 1990s, have become synonymous with precision and quality. Used by numerous professionals, including Tiger Woods, these putters are revered for their craftsmanship and feel, the early models based very much on the PING Anser. Scotty Cameron’s designs have played a crucial role in shaping the modern approach to putting and they have become collectors’ items across the decades with headcovers selling for hundreds in online auctions.

Taylormade R7 Quad TaylorMade R7 Quad Driver:

This driver, launched in 2004, featured movable weights, allowing golfers to customize their ball flight. It was one of the first adjustable drivers and paved the way for modern adjustability in golf clubs. Technology was really starting to move in this generation and the race for distance was very firmly on a young Tiger Woods was very much moving the needle.

Taylormade R11

The 2011 introduction of the so recognisable white driver was not only a serious performer but also a marketing triumph from Taylormade. A driver which featured the adaptable hosel where you could alter your loft and face angle to customise your ball flight. Another great driver from which made its way into many pros and amateurs’ bags around the world.

The fact that you could play the game with the same clubs that your hero’s use, from Zebra putter to the Cleveland wedges and not forgetting the introduction of the Pro V1 ball. Nothing spins like a balata!! I hope it’s brought back a few memories of some great rounds with favourite clubs over the years, and even for the youngsters reading, the technology moves so fast you may be reminiscing about Callaway Fusion Drivers and remember the first rescue clubs!
